INFLUENCIA DE LA ALTITUD EN LA REPRODUCCIÓN SEXUAL DE PAPAS NATIVAS COMO
SISTEMA DE CONSERVACIÓN IN-SITU EN LOS ANDES DEL NORTE DEL PERU

RESUMEN
La reproducción sexual representa una estrategia de propagación para recuperar, expandir e
incrementar la variabilidad y diversidad de las especies. Con elpropósito de evaluar el efecto de la
altitud sobre la formación y vigor de Semilla Sexual de Papa (SSP), evaluamos en dos niveles
altitudinales la producción de semilla sexual de 22 cultivares nativos de las especies Solanum
tuberosum spp andigena, S. Chaucha y S. goniocalyx en el distrito de Frías, (Provincia de Ayabaca,
andes del norte peruano) durante 2 años consecutivos. La zona alta (3200 a3050 msnm)
corresponde a condiciones ecológicas de región Jalca (temperaturas media anual máxima y mínima, de
15.0°C y 9.0 °C) y la zona baja (1650 a 1750 msnm) corresponde a condiciones ecológicas de región
Yunga (temperatura media anual máxima y mínima, 23.0° C y 13.5° C). Estas altitudes poseen
condiciones ventajosas y desventajosas para la producción de tubérculos y de semilla sexual.
Veinte deveintidós cultivares produjeron SSP en Jalca y en Yunga. En la Yunga los cultivares
produjeron desde 0.25 hasta 8.05 g semilla/planta; mientras que en la Jalca desde 0.06 hasta 1.96 g
semilla/planta. Estos resultados mostraron que la Jalca limita significativamente el proceso
reproductivo sexual.
El buen vigor registrado en las pruebas in-vitro y de campo de la SSP producida en Yunga, indica al
usode esta altitud como estrategia para generación de reservas de semillas, con las que se puede
rescatar genotipos perdidos, incrementar la diversidad y variabilidad en la zona alta y expandirla en la
zona baja.

SUMARY
The sexual reproduction stands for the spread of strategy which allows the recovery, expansion and
increase of the species variability and diversity. With the aim of evaluating the effect of the altitude on
the potato sexual seed formation and vigor (PSS). We’ve evaluated the twoaltitudinal levels of the
production sexual seed of 22 cultivars native of the species Solanum tuberosum andigena, S chaucha
and S. gonyocalyx in the district of Frias (Ayabaca Province, in the northern Peruvian andes) for two
consecutive years. The highest zone is (3200 to 3050 masl) which correspond to the ecological
condition on “Jalca” region (medium temperature per year maximum and minimum, 15.0 °Cand 9 °C)
and the low zone (1650 to 1750 masl) which correspond to the ecological conditions on “Yunga”
region (medium temperature per year maximum and minimum, 23 °C and 13.5 °C). These altitudes
have advantage and disadvantage conditions for the production of tuber and sexual seed.
Twenty of de twenty two cultivars have produced PSS en Jalca and Yunga. In Yunga, the cultivars
produced from 0.25to 8.05 g. seed/plant while in Jalca from 0.06 to 1.96 g. seed/plant. These results
show in Jalca there is a meaningful limitation of the sexual reproductive process.
The good vigor registered in the tests in-vitro and farm of PSS produced in Yunga indicates the use of
this altitude as strategy for the creation of seed reserves, these ones which can rescue lost genotypes
and increase thevariability and diversity in the high level and extending in the low zone.
