No deaths or serious complications have been causally linked to the EC. Short-term side effects are:

Nausea and vomiting - The levonorgestrel-only regimen isassociated with a significantly lower incidence of nausea and vomiting than the combined regimen. Nausea and vomiting, respectively, occur in approximately 18% and 4% of women using levonorgestrel-onlyEC, in approximately 43% and 16% of women using the combined regimen (1). The incidence of nausea and vomiting is lower with the levonorgestrel-only regimen, prophylactic antiemetics are not needed.With the combined regimen, pretreatment with antiemetics may be beneficial due to the incidence of nausea was reported 30 to 60% (2).

If vomiting is severe, the EC can be administered vaginally. Studies of vaginal administration combined oral contraceptive pills suggestthat the hormones are absorbed effectively through the vaginal epithelium (4).

Irregular bleeding - After using the EC, menstruation usually occurs within 1 week before or after the scheduled time.Some patients experience irregular bleeding or spotting during the week or a month after treatment, a trial of the levonorgestrel-only found that 16% of women, menstrual bleeding is not in the firstweek of use (5). If the EC is taken early in the cycle, the more likely a woman to experience bleeding before expected menses. Irregular bleeding associated with the EC is resolved without treatment.Other side effects - Some patients have reported experiencing side effects within the short, such as breast tenderness, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache and fatigue (6).
