2. The Characters
Ralph -  The novel’s protagonist, the twelve-year-old English boy who is elected leader of the group of boys marooned on the island. Ralph attempts to coordinate the boys’ efforts to build a miniature civilization on the island until they can be rescued.Ralph represents human beings’ civilizing instinct, as opposed to the savage instinct that Jack embodies.
Jack -  The novel’s antagonist, one of the older boys stranded on the island. Jack becomes the leader of the hunters but longs for total power and becomes increasingly wild, barbaric, and cruel as the novel progresses. Jack, adept at manipulating the other boys, represents the instinct ofsavagery within
human beings, as opposed to the civilizing instinct Ralph represents.
Simon -  A shy, sensitive boy in the group. Simon, in some ways the only naturally “good” character on the island, behaves kindly toward the younger boys and is willing to work for the good of their community.
Piggy -  Ralph’s “lieutenant.” A whiny, intellectual boy, Piggy’s inventiveness frequently leads toinnovation, such as the makeshift sundial that the boys use to tell time. Piggy represents the scientific, rational side of civilization.
Roger -  Jack’s “lieutenant.” A sadistic, cruel older boy who brutalizes the littluns and eventually murders Piggy by rolling a boulder onto him.
Sam and Eric -  A pair of twins closely allied with Ralph.

3. Themes and Lessons to Learn
- Society holds everyonetogether, and without it, the basic concept of right and wrong are lost.
- People will abuse power when it's not earned.
- When given a chance, people will hurt others to help or save themselves.
- There is good and bad in everyone and can emerge depending on the situation.
- The fear of the unknown can be a powerful force: it can empower or scare you.

The Lord of the Flies -  Thename given to the sow’s head that Jack’s gang impales on a stake and erects in the forest as an offering to the “beast.” The Lord of the Flies comes to symbolize the primordial instincts of power and cruelty that take control of Jack’s tribe.

They start a signal fire but realize they need to control it or it would've burned down the whole island.
As the boysexplore the island they see wild pigs and find fresh water and fruit. Unfortunately, without rules, parents, or any authority figure, the boys are playing all day and not thinking about being rescued or survival. Ralph calls an assembly to remind the boys of what they need to be doing and Jack and his followers become really negative towards Ralph and his ideas of keeping everyone together andworking together for everyone's good. As Jack and his guys are hunting, they let the signal fire go out and a helicopter flying over does not see them.
Jack decides to form his own tribe and their main purpose is to hunt for food. The boys with Jack look more and more like savages. There is a big storm that comes through the island destroying their shelters and a cave with a "monster" in it is...
