What is a Harvest Festival?
Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown on the land.
Thanksgiving ceremonies and celebrations for a successful harvest are both worldwide and very ancient. In Britain, we have given thanks for successful harvests since pagan times. We celebrate this day by singing, praying and decorating our churches with baskets of fruit and foodin a festival known as 'Harvest Festival', usually during the month of September.
Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them. This makes them want to share with others who are not so fortunate. In schools and in Churches, people bring food from home to a Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the food that has been put on display is usually made into parcelsand given to people in need.

When is Harvest Festival?
Harvest festivals are traditionally held on or near the Sunday of the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (about Sept. 23). In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October.
Unlike the USA and Canada, the UK does not have a national holidayfor Harvest Festival.
The harvest festival of the Jewish religion is called Sukkot or 'Feast of Ingathering' or 'the 'Feast of Tabernacles'. It is celebrated at the end of the year, after Rosh Hoshanah, the third of the great Annual Festivals.
The George Cross was instituted by a Royal Warrant dated 24 September 1940. It is the highest civil decoration of the United Kingdom and is only awarded"for acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger".
Why was the Georges Cross made?
King George VI felt the need to formally recognise individual acts of outstanding bravery by the civilian population during the Blitz - Nazi Germany's bombing campaign against British cities. He decided to created an award for the men and women of theCommonwealth whose courage could not be marked by any other honour.
What can be seen on the George Cross?
The silver cross, bearing an image of St George slaying the dragon and the words "FOR GALLANTRY", was designed by Percy Metcalfe and is struck at the Royal Mint. The reverse is plain and bears the name of the recipient and the date of the award.
How many people have received the award?
The GeorgeCross has been awarded directly to 155 people, 84 posthumously, and was bestowed on over 100 recipients during the Second World War

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean (or Meridian) Time and is the average time that the earth takes to rotate from noon-to-noon.
The use of Greenwich Meantime (GMT) began at 3pm on 25 September 1676, when two very accurate clocks were set in motionat the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England. Greenwich Mean Time became standard for England; in 1884 it became standard for the world.
In the UK, GMT is the official time only during winter; during summer (March to October) British Summer Time is used.
At the Greenwich Observatory, the Shepherd clock was installed in about 1852. This was the first clock to show Greenwich Mean Time to thepublic.
