An integrated pest management (IPM) developed by INIFAP (The National Institute for Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research), was validatedin three commercial orchards planted with Golden and Red Delicious during 1999-2000. The validation method was the comparison between the grower management and the INIFAP IPM system, in adjacent areasof one hectare within the same orchard. The parameters evaluated were: a) the reduction of pest and disease management costs in apples, b) net benefit increase per hectare, and c) the reduction ofthe environmental impact caused pesticide use. The results indicated that the average cost of pest and disease management was reduced in 25 and 28% during 1999 and 2000, respectively, with a biannualaverage of 26.5%, when the IPM system was used. The net benefit increase per hectare was 26.9% in 1999, and 11.3% in 2000, with an average of 19.1%. The reduction of the environmental impact was66.8% in 1999, and 89.5% in 2000. The average reduction in both years was 78.1%.

Durante los años 1999 y 2000, se validó en área comercial de tres huertos con los cultivares Golden yRed Delicious el sistema de manejo integrado de plagas (MIP) en manzano, desarrollado por Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP). El método de validación fuela comparación entre el manejo del productor y el manejo de plagas y enfermedades del INIFAP en superficies contiguas de una hectárea dentro de un mismo huerto.
