Prescribing Exercise to Treat Depression


Dr. Madhukar H. Trivedi, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, saw that therewas an improvement pattern in his patients with depression when they did exercise on a daily basis during their medical treatment. He decided to make a study to see if exercise couldbe used as an additional way to help speed depression patient’s remission. Dr. Trivedi with other researchers recruited volunteers with depression and divided them into threegroups, each having a different routine of exercise. The study showed that 29.5 % of patients reached remission, although it may seem low it is higher that giving extra pills to helpspeed the antidepressants work.

I find Dr. Trivedi`s study very interesting and I can relate a lot to it because for heretical migraines I used to be treated with a medicine thatcontained S.S.R.I. and since I had been taking it for a long time I developed a serotonin syndrome for which I had to leave school for almost 2 months, I had to be hospitalized for 2weeks and affected my neurological system so bad I couldn’t coordinate or walk. So you can imagine what an inconvenient it was to have this side effect of a medicine and if exercisecan help depression patients by reducing the risk of medicines side effects and by helping their remission speed I believe that it should be always recommended as a firstalternative to depression patients.
I would encourage Dr. Trivedi to keep up with his great work because he could revolutionize depression treatment. I would also recommend the author ofthe article to keep publishing more about the studies. I would highly recommend this article to any patient with depression so they can propose to their doctors this alternative.
