El periodo de esplendor del arte romano abarca los dos primeros siglos del Imperio. Pero ya a principios del siglo II de nuestra era, desde el tiempo de Adriano (año 117),se inicia la decadencia del buen gusto que se acentúa en el siglo III y se confirma en el siglo IV por efecto de cierto barroquismo o irregularidad y pesadez en los estilos aunque aumente el fasto y la magnitud de las obras. A causa del profundo centralismo ejercido por Roma sobre sus provincias en todos los aspectos de la vida, se originó un arte muy uniforme sin que pueda hablarse de escuelasprovinciales, al menos durante la época imperial. No obstante, dada la amplitud del Imperio y su constitución en diferentes momentos, no existe una contemporalidad cronológica. Se pueden destacar las siguientes características:

1- Es un arte de ecléctico resultado de la síntesis de las formas griegas, etruscas y orientales.
