This edition of the play is intended to be a reliable edition but is, under no circumstances, to
be considered as a thorough critical edition complete with variant readings, extensive notes, nor any
of the valuable expository discussion that is usually found in such. Those who would like to study
the play or to comment on it with greater security than canbe claimed for this electronic edition
should refer to one of the modern critical editions of the work: The edition based on the autograph,
by Cornelius van Dam and published in Salamanca, by Anaya in 1968, or that prepared by A. David
Kossoff and published in Madrid by Clasicos Castalia, in 1970.Either of these editions should be
easily found in any reasonable university library. In them youwill also find a bibliography of early
editions and manuscripts available for the play, cogent discussion of the work as literature, and a
suggestive bibliography of articles about this comedia.
El castigo sin venganza has also been the subject of many studies that have been published
since these two editions were prepared. These items may be identified by reference to the valuableABibliography on the Comedia@ published each fall in the Bulletin of the Comediantes. The video
archives of the AHCT contain a of the play, as performed in the ASiglo de Oro@ Festival at El
Chamizal National Memorial in 1997 by the Compañía de Teatro Universitario de Guadalajara under
the direction of Víctor Castillo.
There is a translation that has been reported to be available from Aris and Phillips(Warminster) as prepared by C. J. Davies. This publication should also include a very fine
introduction and an edition based on the best available criticism as of the time it was published.
