The Jungle Writing Assignment
In the early 1900s hard work commitment andgood social values where important too in order to survive in such rough society but that wouldn’t get you anywhere, at the time there was a bigdemand, so in order to keep from being exploited one had to be smart and be better than the rest, not specifically becoming a thief, liar or apredator.
Becoming a predator was more of a short range solution meaning that any income you got being dishonest would later on be exposed tothe public and it will be the end to that person (in most cases), to become a thief to survive is an anti-workeism idea that yes it would keep youfrom being exploited at a factory etc., But again is only a short range solution that won’t last.
Jurgis is able to take care of his familyeven though he wasn’t an immoral person but he was determined to shield Ona and their family from starvation and homelessness compared to otherpeople in his town that decided to start drinking a lot and becoming alcoholics he tries his best to not be part of the large amount of peoplewho’s being taking advantage of which were mostly immigrants by staying away from bad temptations, learning English and becoming a Citizen. Thisshows us how he is improving his status without being an immoral person or a thief just being smart and not making the same mistakes the rest does.
