Mike Nichols’ seminal coming-of-age film, The Graduate dealt with sex and relationships in a manner that had never before been explored in American cinema and would eventually pave the way for films for generations to come. Hoffman’s portrayal of the post-graduate “All-American” boy will go down in the annals of film history as one of the finest performances of the time, as well as the stunningperformance by Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson.
The film is in essence and indictment of American society at the time. A deadpan comedy of the blackest variety The Graduate is in all entirely about sex, ennui, and desperation. The idea of the uncertainty of reaching adulthood, and struggling to accept this transformation, the idea of how frightening the future really is. Benjamin Braddock’srelationship with Mrs. Robinson was revolutionary in the realm of American cinema for a multitude of reasons. Coming out of the 50’s there was still a certain era of American values that were set into film, radio, and television. But the times were changing. The MPAA was no longer the final say in what a film could be about. Directors were beginning to push the limits of where film could go, pushingthe boundaries not only of the artistic medium but of good taste as well. One such case was Mike Nichols’ The Graduate. The entire idea of a strictly sexual relationship was in and of itself enough to turn heads, however, the fact that Mrs. Robinson was such a much older woman, in fact, old enough to be young Benjamin’s mother, and personally seduced him into the relationship, was downrightscandalous. The very idea of such straightforward and pronounced sex was unheard of at the time, particularly between two people of such an age barrier, and out of wedlock.
This very idea revolutionized cinema in the fact that the film was actually respected for it’s portrayal of common American ideals. A remarkably popular and important film, this was a film that particularly catered to theyouth generation of the time. Everything, from the soundtrack, to the editing style, to the cinematography, to the soundtrack in particular, were specifically focused towards the youth of America. Performed by Simon and Garfunkle, a popular band of the era, the soundtrack rang true with the youthful generation of the late 1960’s. The moody enigmatic pop-folk swelling to the action and pacing of thefilm creating a certain ambience that distinctly evoked the spirit and sounds of the 1960’s, the new generation and the ideas of free love, the uncertainty of life after college. A film that was true to its audience and an altogether realistic portrayal of the society at the time.
All the while a certain level of absurdity was maintained throughout the film. Examples range from the entirerelationship between Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson, to his trek across state to find Elaine, to his immediate marriage proposal, one might nearly find the film simply ridiculous, yet it is always grounded in certain level of reality, which is what in fact makes the message of the film so poignant. The idea of how there are certain expectations for a growing man that are either daunting or carried with acertain level of apprehension. Nichols’ best displays this idea particularly in the scene at Benjamin’s birthday party, in which he stands inside the kitchen, decked out in a wetsuit complete with harpoon, mask, and oxygen tank. He finds the requests and demands of his elders and the future to be asinine, pointless, and downright embarrassing, unable to grasp why he should have to do anything. Heis unwilling to come to terms with where he is in life. Benjamin finds himself unsure of what he wants to do, but contained and forced by his parents and those around him to find some greater purpose in life. Benjamin’s constant obsession with his fish is indicative of who he is as a person, a shy young man who would much rather sit back and observe others between the safety of a sheet of glass....
