EL HONRADO LEÑADOR
Había una vez un pobre leñador que regresaba a su casa después de una jornada de duro trabajo. Al cruzar un puentecillo sobre el río, se le cayo el hachaal agua.
Entonces empezó a lamentarse tristemente: ¿Como me ganare el sustento ahora que no tengo hacha?
Al instante ¡oh, maravilla! Una bella ninfa aparecía sobre las aguasy dijo al leñador:
Espera, buen hombre: traeré tu hacha.
Se hundió en la corriente y poco después reaparecía con un hacha de oro entre las manos. El leñador dijo que aquellano era la suya. Por segunda vez se sumergió la ninfa, para reaparecer después con otra hacha de plata.
Tampoco es la mía dijo el afligido leñador.
Por tercera vez la ninfabusco bajo el agua. Al reaparecer llevaba un hacha de hierro.
¡Oh gracias, gracias! ¡Esa es la mía!
Pero, por tu honradez, yo te regalo las otras dos. Has preferido la pobrezaa la mentira y te mereces un premio.
HONEST WOODCUTTER
There was once a poor woodcutter who was returning home after a day of hard work. Crossing a bridge over theriver, he dropped his ax into the water.
Then he began to wail mournfully : How do I gain the livelihoods now that I have no ax ?
Instantlyoh , wonder ! A beautiful nymph appearedon the water and the woodcutter said :
Wait, good man : bring your ax .
He sank into the stream and soon reappeared with a hatchet golden hands. Woodman said that was nothis. For the second time submerged nymph , to reappear after another silver ax .
Nor is mine said the woodcutter afflicted .
For the third time the nymph look underwater. Toreappear wearing an iron ax .
Oh thank you, thank you! This is mine !
But, your honor, I give you the other two. You have preferred poverty to lie and you deserve a prize.
