Essay #1 “The Hobbit”
Hobbits are rather boring. Growth in characters in a story helps the reader to them, and it helps the plot develop and beinteresting. In The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, Bilbo starts out as a boring hobbit that develops into an adventurous individual. He disproves the stereotypical hobbit as the story evolves. A dynamic characterchanges in some important way. Bilbo shows he is a dynamic character because he becomes a leader-like figure; he obtains more knowledge, and gains confidence.
Throughout Bilbo’s adventures he learnsto be a theft. When the dwarves come to Bilbo’s house, Gandalf represents Bilbo as a theft. The first time Bilbo learns to be a theft is when he steals’ from the trolls. Bilbo tries run away with oneof the trolls’ money bags, but they hear the noise and start chasing him. "Smaug came hurtling in from the North, licking the mountain-sides with flame, beating his great wings with a noise like aroaring wind.
“His hot breath shriveled the grass before the door, and drove in through the crack they had left and scorched them as they hid. Flickering fires leaped up and black rock-shadows danced.The darkness fell as he passed again.” (Tolkien 217). Another person who Bilbo steals is Smaug. Bilbo stole a golden cup from Smaug treasure when he was asleep, but as fast as he woke up he tookaccountability of the treasure and found out that the cup was missing. Smaug went flying around the mountain looking for someone around but he didn’t found anything. Then Bilbo went back to see if thedragon was asleep but he was awake; Smaug couldn’t see him because Bilbo had the invisibility ring. But then he smelled him and starts chasing him, until Bilbo got into the secret passage.
Dynamiccharacters are examples of how people evolve throughout their lives. As Bilbo becomes a leader, obtains more knowledge, and gains confidence he proves to be a dynamic character. When readers seek out...
