Cuando se habla de libros artesanales, se habla de la belleza de un ejemplar único, siempre único, aunque una reducida tirada seriada exista. También se habla de la manufactura del mismo, hecho en papeles especiales, muchas veces manuscrito, siempre con toques personales que no se volverán a repetir en otro ejemplar. Y aún de su terminación, su encuadernado, el forrado, los hilos...
Ver más...Los libros artesanales conforman desde el principio una suerte de museo, libros para ver ahora y quién sabe cuándo. En las mesas de saldos de la avenida Corrientes seguro que no van a aparecer. En la pasada Feria del Libro tal vez no hubo algo más bello que el espacio que compartieron Polonia y Grecia. Perdón los que tanto esfuerzo pusieron en convertir los asépticos stands en lugares agradables ycomerciales. Más allá del logro de la total oscuridad arquitectónica que da un efecto escénico similar al del teatro negro, hablamos de libros más allá de la literatura. Los libros como objetos. Los libros como obras de arte.
En Polonia, brillaron los libros de la editorial Kurtiak i Ley, especialista en libros artesanales. Aquel color crema con forma de corazón, en el que lee, quien lea polaco,cánticos navideños, o el otro con incrustaciones de piedras preciosas en su lomo. Aquí nada estuvo a la venta. Grecia tampoco vendió nada, a pesar de las protestas del público. Ni de Niko Kazanzakis, ni los de cocina, ni aquellos con fotos de las islas o el monte Olimpo (libro éste, dicho sea de paso, que viene con un CD con sonidos de esa montaña mitológica). Se destacó I zalasa (El mar), conilustraciones de 1865. Para soñar con el mar, nada como Grecia.
Las posibilidades y características de un libro artesanal se potencian en cada gesto, cada retruécano material que encuentra la edición. Y lo que pudo haber sido un oficio con sabor antiguo, hoy encuentra nuevos horizontes al considerar al objeto mismo como obra de arte y al incluir en su manufactura tecnologías contemporáneas, comola de un CD ROM.

Some Interesting Bookbinding Techniques

I love making books out of wierd things. I love using small books as greeting cards, or gifts of information, or pieces of art, or very special, one-off zines. Here are a few simple bookbinding methods, and a ton of ideas for variations. So, CraftOn!The Fabric Book: Method 2Fabric books have such a lovely, touchable quality, and they lend themselves to all kinds of embellishment techniques. You can use up your fabric scraps, or get some old linens or garments from the thrift store. The only thing to keep in mind is that woven fabrics work best for this project. Stretcy fabrics, not so much.

• Decide on the overall finished size of your book,and then imagine it opened, and lying flat. That’s the size of fabric pieces you’ll need to cut in order to make your book pages.

• A simple way to keep all your fabric pieces the same size is to make a cardboard template, and then trace it onto your fabric with a sharp pencil. Then, you can cut carefully along your pencil line. Or, if you’re blessed with a rotary cutter, use that.

• Ifyou’re worried about your fabric fraying, you can do a couple things: you can cut the edges with pinking shears, or you can get a product called "Fray Check"at your fabric store and apply it to the edges. I think a little fraying looks nice, though.

• Some fabrics look the same on both sides. This is great, because then you can use a single layer of fabric for each page of your book. If yourfabric has a distinct wrong side, however, and you don’t want this to show, you can get a product called "fusible webbing" in the quilting section of your craft store. It’s like a double-stick tape for fabric that you activate by ironing. You can use it to fuse two pieces of fabric together, back-to-back, to create each page.
