DON GIL DE LAS CALZAS VERDES
This edition of the play is intended to be a reliable edition but is, under no circumstances, to
be considered as a thorough critical edition complete with variant readings, extensive notes, nor any
of the valuable expository discussion that is usually found in such. Those who would like to study
the play or to comment on it with greatersecurity than can be claimed for this electronic edition
should refer to a modern critical edition of the work, that by Gordon Minter published with his
English translation of the text by Aris and Phillips in Warminster, England, in 1991. Two other
recent translations, each with explanatory comments are recommended : Don Gil de las calzas
verdes (Don Gil of the Green Breeches),translated. and adapted by Laurence Boswell and Deirdre
McKenna and published in Bath. England, by Absolute Classics in 1992 (As performed at the Gate
Theatre, London, in 1990); and Don Gil de las calzas verdes (Don Gil of the Breeches Green) as
translated by John Browning and Fiorigio Minelli and published in Ottawa, Canada, by Dovehouse
Editions. in 1991.
Don Gil de las calzas verdes hasalso been the subject of many studies that have been
published since these two editions were prepared. These items may be identified by reference to the
valuable ABibliography on the Comedia@ published each fall in the Bulletin of the Comediantes.

huertas de Valladolid,
5 Puerta del Campo, Espolón,
puentes, galeras, Esgueva,
con todo aquello que lleva,
por ser como inquisición
de [la] pinciana nobleza,
10 pues cualbrazo de justicia,
desterrando su inmundicia
califica su limpieza;
ya que nos traen tus pesares
a que de esta insigne puente
15 veas la humilde corriente del enano Manzanares,
que por arenales rojos
corre, y se debe correr,que en tal puente venga a ser
20 lágrima de tantos ojos;
)no sabremos qué ocasión
te ha traído de esa traza?
)Qué peligro te disfraza
de damisela en varón?
25 JUANA: Por agora no, Quintana.
QUINTANA: Cinco días hace hoy
que mudo contigo voy.
Un lunes por lamañana
en Valladolid quisiste
30 fiarte de mi lealtad:
dejaste aquella ciudad;
a esta Corte te partiste,
quedando sola la casa
de la vejez que te adora,
35 sin ser posible hasta agora
saber de ti lo que pasa,...
