Resumen: El estudio de los fenomenos politicos y sociales puede realizarseusando diferentesenJoques. Abstract: Political and social phenomena can be studied using a variety of approaches. This study analyzes the strengths and weaknesses o' three approaches(rational choice, culture and structure) around which the main researchagendas of North American researchershave revolved. By way of aconclusion,it states that in the 1990s, moreso than in previous decades, the opportunity arose for academicstrainedin different disciplinesand schools, yet eager to understand the political and social phenomenafound throughout the changing world situation, to work together

INTRODUCCION L ESTUDIO DE LAS CIENCIASPOLiTICAS y sociales puede realizarse usando diver-

sos enfoques. Sin embargo, privilegiar un enfoque y una metodologia sobre otros puede dejar de lado aspectos importantes de los fen6menos politicos y sociales. Mas aun, diferentes tradiciones de investigacion suelen fundamentarse en una serie de supuestos ym6todos que no siempre son compatibles. El prop6sito principal de este trabajo consistira en analizar algunas de las fortalezas y debilidades que tienen tres enfoques (cultura, estructura y eleccion racional) para el estudio de los procesos politicos.
