Electricity
One stormy night in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin was doing an experiment with a kite. After that, the principles of electricity gradually became understood. I chose this topic becauseelectricity figures everywhere in our lives. In the mid-1800s, everyone’s lives changed with the invention of the electric light bulb. Now at days, electricity is one of our useful services becauseit gives us the light, starts our cars, cooks and refrigerates our food. These represent a few of the innumerable applications of the electricity, but what is it? I am going to talk about whereelectricity comes from, what it is and how it works.
The entire universe is composed of matter. A basic knowledge of the structure of matter is essential in the understanding of electricity.
All matteris made up of atoms, and an atom has a compact center called the nucleus. The nucleus contains protons which are positive charge and uncharged particles called neutrons. The nucleus of an atom issurrounded by electrons which are negative charge. The negative charge of an electron is equal to the positive charge of a proton, and the number of electrons in an atom is usually equal to the number ofprotons. When the balancing force between protons and electrons is altered or modified by an outside force, an atom may gain or lose an electron. When electrons are "lost" from an atom, the freemovement of these electrons constitutes an electric current.
Now that we know a bit about atoms, let’s see what electricity is about.
Electricity is a basic part of nature and it is one of our mostwidely used forms of energy. We can generate electricity from the conversion of other sources of energy like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and other natural sources. On the other hand, electricityrefers to the movement of electrons through a conducting medium such as copper and silver.
Now let me tell you how electricity works.
The electrons are charged particles and will be directly...
