El motor de dos tiempos desarrolla su ciclo completo de funcionamiento en una vuelta de cigüeñal obteniéndose una explosión-combustión cada vez que el pistón pasa por el PMS, por lo tanto, el doble de carreras detrabajo que en un motor de 4 tiempos. Pero en cambio se dispone de menos tiempo para realizar cada una de las fases por lo que el llenado de los cilindros es peor.
El intercambio de gases se realiza a través de las lumbreras situadas en el cilindro y cuya apertura o cierre es controlada por el movimiento del pistón, ya que esta clase de motores no dispone de sistema de distribución con lo que seconsigue que este motor tenga una gran sencillez mecánica, característica principal de este tipo de motores.
Los motores Otto de 2 tiempos (explosión) son utilizados en pequeñas motocicletas y pequeñas cilindradas ya que los motores de 4 tiempos no saldrían rentables al ser mas caros y voluminosos.
Los motores de ciclo diesel se utilizan como motores de grandes cilindradas y elevadaspotencias, se emplean en propulsión marina y motores estacionarios (centrales eléctricas)
