Embedding and Adding

Embedding is the process of adding new sentences to the original one, making it more and more complicated. A famous example is one of the children’s favorite stories aboutthe house that Jack built. This is the house that Jack built is the main sentence. Embedding other sentences, we will have:
1. This is the house that Jack built.
2. This is the malt that layin the house that Jack built.
3. This is the rat that ate the malt, that lay in the house that Jack built.
Each instance of “that” is followed by a sentence that has been inserted or embedded intoone before it. This example gives a fairly indication that speakers can build up sentences into more complex ones, and that there is no longest sentence in the language and also allows the speakerto construct negative, question, reflexive, and passive sentences.
To understand that complex structure is necessary to know the PRS #5, which states that a noun phrase consists of an optionalArticle, a Noun, and an optional sentence.
Some examples of embedded sentences are the ones italicized:
1. John thought that the senator was a fool
2. The boy who laughed is my brother

There remain additional transformations that serve to conjoin words, phrases, clauses and sentences. These transformations also involve two sentences:
1. Apples and oranges are myfavorites (N + N)
2. The man and the boy pleased the woman NP + NP)
3. She washed the dishes and he waxed the floor (S + S)
