BACK GROUND:
A. The publishing center shifted from Boston to New York -freedom for authors from manyregions to publish their fictions;
B. The growth of communication and transportation after the Civil War;
C. The rapid growth of local magazines providing a playgroundfor regionalism.
SETTING:
A. Regionalism manifests a quality in literature, stressing fidelity to a particular geographical sec­tion and a faithful representation of itshabits, speech, manners, history, folklore, or beliefs.
B. Regionalism can also be viewed as resulted from the desire both to preserve distinctive ways of life beforeindustrialization destroyed them and to come to terms with the harsh realities that seemed to replace those early times.
FEATURES:
A. Presenting a locale distinguishedfrom the outside world;
B. Describing the exotic and the picturesque;
C. Glorifying the past;
D. Showing things as they are;
E. Stressing the influence of settingon character
F. Nostalgia or sentimentality (might be considered weaknesses)

Kate Chopin was born Kate O'Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850 to Eliza and ThomasO'Flaherty. She was the third of five children, but her sisters died in infancy and her brothers (from her father's first marriage) in their early twenties. She was theonly child to live past the age of twenty-five.
In 1870, at the age of twenty, she married Oscar Chopin, twenty-five, and the son of a wealthy cotton-growing family inLouisiana. After their marriage they lived in New Orleans where she had five boys and two girls, all before she was twenty-eight. Oscar died of swamp fever there in 1882.
