The History
Town gas is a more general term referring to
manufactured gaseous fuels produced for sale to
consumers and municipalities. It is also known as
manufactured gas, syngas , hygas, and
producer gas in some countries. In the days of gas
lighting it was also known as "illumination gas,"although this term largely fell out of use before the
Second World War. Originally a by-product of the coking
process, coal gas was extensively exploited in the 19th
and early 20th centuries for lighting, cooking and
heating.
