AASHTO M 140-03 is identical to ASTM D 977-98 except for the following provisions: 1. All references to the ASTM standards contained in ASTM D 977-98, listed in the following table, shall be replaced with the corresponding AASHTO standard. Referenced Standards

-2 . Replace Section 3.1 of ASTM D 977-98 with the following: 3.1 The emulsified asphalt shall be homogeneous. Within 30 days after delivery and provided separation has not been caused by freezing, the emulsified asphalt shall be homogeneous after thorough mixing. 3. Add the following footnotes to the end of Table 1 of ASTM D 977-98 as follows: h Demulsibili9-The demulsibility test shall be madewithin 30 days from date of shipment. ' Sieve Test-A percentage of 0.30 is acceptable for samples taken at point of use. Refer to AASHTO R 5 for typical applications.

1. Scope 1.1 This specification covers thirteen grades of emulsified asohalt for use in Davement construction in the manner designated. 2. Referenced Documents 2.1 ASTM Standards: D 140 Practice for Sampling Bituminous ~aterials' D 244 Test Methods for Emulsified Asphalts2
3. Requirements 3.1 The emulsifiedasphalt shall be tested within 14 days of
delivery. The emulsified asphalt shall be homogeneous after thorough mixing provided separation has not been caused by freezing. Emulsified asphalts separated by freezing shall not be tested. 3.2 Emulsified asphalt shall conform to the requirements prescribed in Table 1.
4. Sampling 4.1 Samples of emulsified asphalt shall be taken in accordance withPractice D 140. 4.2 Samples shall be stored in clean, airtight sealed containers as specified in Practice D 140 at a remperature of not less than 4°C) until tested.
