Case 1
The 27-year old white female has Lyme disease. It is produced by a bite of a wood tick. The microorganism that causes the infection is Borrelia burghdor feri according tothe article “Lyme Disease’’ by Healthwise Staff (1). When a wood tick bites, it inserts its head into the skin. The wood tick has to be attached to the skin at least for 36 hours in order forinfect the person(1). This patient presents some specific symptoms just like the symptoms of Lyme disease.
The features critical to diagnosing Lyme disease are bite of a tick on the patient (2). Themost specific feature is a bump with a pinch of red that is called erythema migrans, which can be extended from the bite tick until 5 cm until 16 cm or even bigger (3). Certainly, the most commonsymptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, cardiac disorders, stiff neck and tender joints (1, 2). However, not all victims know if they have been bitten and have a tick on their bodies.
The organisms thatcause Lyme disease live in several areas. However, it lives specifically in the jungle where deer are common (3). This scenario is the perfect condition to find wood ticks. A tick will bite in anypart of the body, but its favorite places are warm, moist and dark areas such as armpits and crotch area (3). According to Dr. Klenerman in the article “Lyme Disease” when the tick discovers theperfect place on the human body, it probes on its victim and draws up blood , this puts the host at risk of infection(2).
The treatment for Lyme disease depends of the stage and severity of the infection(4). According to the Disease Society of America, there are two treatments that can be prescribed with antibiotic (4). One option is 100mg of doxycicline taken orally twice daily for patients, whoare 9 years and older, or 50mg/kg of doxycicline orally per day for kids younger than 9 years (4).
