Inglaterra es considerada como el lugar de nacimiento del futbol moderno y sus reglas datan desde 1863. Su liga es mejor conocida como la Barclays Premier League (por motivos de patrocinio) o tambiéncomo la Premiership en el Reino Unido. La Premier League fue fundada en 20 de febrero de 1992 y cuenta con 20 equipos que juegan un total de 38 partidos en un año. La temporada empieza en Agosto yfinaliza en Mayo, y el equipo que termina con el mayor número de puntos acumulados es coronado campeón de la liga y automáticamente clasifica a la Champions League. Los equipos que terminan en elsegundo al cuarto puesto entran a varias competencias Europeas administradas por la UEFA; los clubes que terminan en los últimos lugares son automáticamente relegados a segunda división. Entre los equiposmás importantes están el Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal entre otros. El torneo es considerado por la FIFA como la liga más fuerte de la última década en Europa superandoa la Primera División de España y la Serie A italiana.
