Life Changing Phone Calls

My alarm clock interrupts my dreams at 6:50 am, as usual. That annoying melody, which I’ve beenmeaning to change for about a month now, makes me open my eyes in an instant. I lay in bed trying to come up with every possible excuse to not get up. Finally, the thought of those endless absences inEnglish makes me drag my body out of bed and into the bathroom. The cold marble under my feet makes me shiver. I grope the wall to find the light switch that seconds later blinds me, forcing me tosquint and look down at my bad pedicure. I finally find the energy to open the faucet, fearing the next few seconds of pain that the feeling of cold water causes. For me, right now, it’s just anotherboring Monday morning. I had no idea.
The call came later on that day. My mom answered the phone and her mouth dropped. Analyzing her face, I put down “To Kill A Mockingbird” on the couch, stood upand walked towards her. Her hands came to her mouth, tears rushed down her face. She hung up without saying a word, grabbed the car keys and signaled me to follow her. I followed her out of the houseand into the car. She sat there, resting her head on the steering wheel, not doing anything about the annoying beep sound. I sat nervously by her side, not wanting to ask anything. Minutes later shestarted the engine and we took off. I fastened my seatbelt and looked out the window. I could see my reflection, I looked worried. We were heading towards my grandparents house.
Everyone was sittingin the living room holding hands. My grandmother was sobbing, looking at the phone desperately. I had never seen my family like that before. Their expressions reflected loss, sadness, sorrow, andfatigue. I think everyone is here. One, two, tree… seventeen. Where is Pablo? My cousin Maria had her head down on her mother’s lap. I didn’t even call her name; I just stood there, nervous and scared....
