Developing an Effective Speech Plan
Speech Plan: A strategy for achieving your speech goal.
An effective speech plan for most speeches is based on the answers to these six (6) questions:
1. How can I develop a speech goal that is adapted to my audience?
2. How can I best adapt my speech to my audience?
3. Where can I find the kind of information that I need to achieve this goal?
4. How canI organize and outline this information in a way that is most likely to help me achieve my goal?
5. How can I create visual aids that will dramatize my information?
6. What can I focus on in practicing the wording and the delivery of my speech?

1. How can I develop a speech goal that is adapted to my audience?
Speech Goal: This is a statement of what you want your
audience to know, believeor do.
To achieve this goal, you begin by selecting a topic. No matter who you are, the advice for determining what to speak about is the same: select a topic that you know something about and that is important to you.
In real-life settings, people are invited to give speeches because of their expertise in a particular subject area. But even when an organization requests a speech in that area, selecting the topic is often in the hands of the speaker.
Subject: A broad area of knowledge, such as the stock market,
child psychology, baseball, or the Middle East.
Topic: some specific aspect of a subject, such as investment
strategies, how a child learns to talk, pitchers & their
pitches, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
