When I was growing up I went to a white school and lived in a white community, where education was viewed aseminence. I didn’t know what was going on back then or that I was different from them. As a child you don’t think about the different racial types or whom you shouldn’t be playing with. All you arethinking is about lets go play and boys have cooties and other nonsense. But the reality is that racial discrimination still exists today. I have recently gone back to my elementary school and haverealized that it is still the same. Not many Mexicans or blacks go to that school and it is predominantly white.
When you grow up and go to high school, many people ask, what elementary school did yougo to, and if you say a white school, then you are most likely to be called white washed and you aren’t considered part of the Mexican or black clan but you aren’t accepted by the whites either. Itis truly sad to hear this but its true; you are considered a social outcast. Something similar happened to me but it happened with my family. I mentioned to my parents several times while growing up ifI could change schools and there reaction was no and they would always mention my grandparents Robby and Sunshine, (who weren’t really my grandparents, but my parents friends and were white) statingthat they always wanted me to continue my education in Point Loma (a white community) and that any other school was out of the question.

Jonathan Kozol talks about how many parents triedto transfer their children to a better school and even lying about their address, just, so their children could have a better education. Many, however, were unsuccessful, and so their children had togo a poverty-stricken school, where it was impossible for children to learn and for them to have one on one education.
