DESCRIBING PLACES
When speaking, it is important to employ a variety of words combined with appropriate adjectives that will be utilized on your sentences to describe places. When you describe aplace you commonly used the verb there is/there are, descriptive adjectives and place prepositions like at, on, under, below, above, near, opposite, on the right, on the left.
The primary purpose ofdescriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader's mind. Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention tothe details by using all of your five senses. Teaching students to write more descriptively will improve their writing by making it more interesting and engaging to read.
ESTRATEGY: "Travel agency"Objective: the principal objective is for students to be able to describe a place, in this case city.
Destination: Intermediate English students
Development:
* Working in pairs students willplaying the roll of travel agents, together will do a search for information about a city following the next questions
Where is it?
Where exactly is that?
What does it look like?
How many peoplelive there and where?
What settlements (cities, villages) does it have?
What sort of climate does it have?
Does it have any extremes of weather?
Is it prone to any type of natural disaster?
Whatare the natural resources and how are they used?
What type of agriculture is there?
What are the main types of transportation and communication?
What makes the people there different to people inother places?
What sort of government does it have?
Is it associated with any other place?
* They will write a composition about this city describing it, and then make a presentation in class,using pictures, trimmings etc.
* They have to convince the teacher to travel to the city
* Wins the team that makes a better description and presentation.
