1.Fixed link between Spain and Morocco
The Strait of Gibraltar has been along history a key passageway forthe sea routes linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its geographical location between Africa and Europe the Strait is an area with high strategic importance.
The closegeographic proximity between both continents, made the idea of a fixed link very attractive. That’s why the Kingdoms of Spain and Morocco, standing on both ends of the Strait, decided to consolidatetheir bilateral relationships by ordering the study of a railway tunnel across the stretch. “Our main objective is to make the western Mediterranean a neuralgic corridor for exchanges between Africa andEurope.”1
The tunnel will also mean a symbol of unquestionable friendship between two cultures which made have had differences among the history.2
This project means an opportunity for theintegrated growth in the area, favoring not only the European Union, but also the Arab- Maghreb Union (AMU) 3 and to the Mediterranean Union4
The flow of people, goods and services in both directions shallcontribute to an acceleration of economic relations which may result in a new territorial organization and a widening in the transports networks on both sides of the Strait.
