In the essay “School is bad for children” by John Holt, it explains how scholareducation system does not teach children. Furthermore, Holt believes that children enter school with more desire and enthusiasm to learn how to discover things for themselves instead of going to school and learn right from a textbook. Moreover, the author of this essay believes that children these days do not learn for themselves, because everything is done for them making them lose their own creativityon how to solve things on their own. Furthermore, students in school start to become frustrated because they learn how to be wrong. In addition, he states in his essay that children learn how to shut their brains off, leading them to the use of some unwanted sources such as drugs and alcohol. Additionally, Holt gives some problem solving strategies to fix this issue such as remove children fromschools for them to explore themselves and the world. Moreover, he states that the best place for children to be in a job or something that works for them to create sense of the world. Holt ends his paragraph by stating “children’s only desires are to make sense of the world and other human beings.”
The article “Is College Worth It?” by Michelle Adams, d how college can expand people’s knowledgeand experience in their lives. Moreover, Adams asked many college students about their thoughts if college worth the money, four out of ten people thought that college did not worth the money. Additionally, after doing some research, Adams discusses that college does worth the money since adults with a college degree earn $20,000 a year than adult without a college degree. She stated that mostHispanics with a low income with an age range between years 18-34 do not have a college degree because they prefer to work instead of studying since they believe that working is how people learn. In the article, Adams express herself by saying that most of the people think that the key to life is to have a good education. Moreover, she says that people should review to which university go because thecost of college has increased more than three times in the past ten years.
There are many comparisons between the article of Adams and the article of Holt, mostly talking about how some people believe that learning from an institute it is not that effective as learning from practicing what people really likes. Furthermore, practical learning is a topic that both authors agree whichconsists in a way of learning which is based on the significant experiences. In his writing, Holt believes that students learn certain content from their application to a particular situation, which should not be far from reality that someone lives day by day.
