Energy consumption is one of the most concerning issues that people need to regulate before it is very late. It isexpected that this consumption is going to double in 50 more years, making it very difficult to satisfy without damaging our surroundings. Consequently, it is tremendously important to find a sustainable way of either satisfying or controlling this increasing demand. Nowadays, about 90% of the energy comes from oil, coal and natural gas, the also well-known “fossil fuels” (Harris, 2012). Theseenergy sources will undoubtedly be over in a couple of years, so it is urgent to light on new ways of supplying electricity to our lives, specifically to fulfil citizen’s transportation. Have you imagined one morning going out to work, but there is no more oil for your car? Or maybe, have you imagined a world with so high carbon dioxide indexes, that many cities around the world would be completelyflooded? That could happen someday if humanity does not take responsibility in what is actually becoming a reality. Political treaties have been made in some countries (except from the U.S which by the way, is a top-polluter and, India and China which were supposed to be developing countries but are already reaching developed countries’ rates) in order to limit some greenhouse gas emissions, suchas the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which have finally led nations pursue new energy sources around the world, such as renewable energies. In a meeting held the 22nd of August of 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) agreed that they do need to provide energy in a sustainable way to about 2 billion people. Apart from this, no agreement was made towardsgreenhouse gases emissions, which a propos, need to be reduced in about 60% by the next twenty years (Hickman and Banister, 2007). It is disappointing that no future plans for renewable energies or energy consumption were made.
According to the International Energy Outlook of 2010, oil consumption will increase in about 25% in the following 20 years, mostly because of the developing countriesthat are getting more and more opportunities and are increasing their life quality, for example getting new cars. Among with this, in Asia for instance, CO2 emissions are set to double in the next 20 years. Above and beyond, the other important oil issue is when it is going to be over. Studies carried out by British Petroleum in 2010 say that in less than 50 years oil production will reach its...
