TOPIC: THE DIFFICULTIES OF GROWING UP
“A lot of people keep asking me if I'm going apply myself when I go back to school next September. It's such a stupid question, in my opinion. I mean how do youknow what you're going to do till you do it? The answer is you don't. I think I am, but how do I know?”
Holden Caulfield.
Growing up could be something easy to handle or something terrible anddark that makes you feel alone, phony and immature when you think that everything is worthless. This is a novel about Holden, a young teenage boy lose to adult hood. Many situations and themes in thenovel, such as immaturity and that he doesn’t accept what is like the life.
Becoming an adult it is a part of growing up in this part of our life we don’t know exactly who we are and when we think thatall around us is pure phoniness, cruelty and lack of individuality. As in the beginning of the novel when he’s looking at the football game from above the hill by himself, he talks about all thehotshots being down there and him apart from everyone else. It is a way of him describing how he sees himself and the rest of the socially, and how he feels that he doesn’t fit with it, how he disagreesand how alone he is.
Holden is a guy that can’t measure up nobody expectations even his own. And this is the first thing that let us know how immature Holden is. Then we have that when he feelsuncomfortable with a situation or a thought, such as when he talks about his younger brother death or when he is surrounded by people he feels uncomfortable with, he puts on his hunting hat, to feel and lookdifferent from the rest of the world as he mentioned and maybe to protect himself in a way from his feelings. He shows immaturity when it comes to sex, which is something everyone faces when enteringto adulthood, as when he’s with the prostitute he feels uncomfortable.
Then we get to the good one in which we can notice what phoniness is and how we act and what we say when we are phony. As in...
