En la época de Santo Tomás la obra de Aristóteles había llegado al mundo cristiano de la mano de Averroes, a través del averroísmo latino, en el que, entre otras cosas que contradecían el dogma católico, se mantenía la teoría de ladoble verdad: una era la verdad de razón y otra era la verdad de fe, de tal manera que no tenían por qué coincidir, e incluso, podían entrar en contradicción.
