Abstract: The complete Spanish text of José Hernández' The Gaucho Martin Fierro (Parts 1-2), Mario Crocco'spreliminary study and historical-biographical notice, both extense, plus two criollo lexicons (one for the work and the other a more general one), are published together (in this e-version) with hundreds of illustrations made along a century. Today considered the most beautiful of the original productions of the River Plate literature, this epic poem was written in vernacular Spanish language,spoken by the "gauchos of the pampas". By the end of the nineteenth century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world, almost as rich as the United States and incomparably richer than Spain, the old mother country. The criollos of the River Plate had good reason to be proud of their achievements, for theirs was one of the great postcolonial success stories. Yet the poem depicts asavage world where the real "bad guys" are the forces of modernization that are destroying his way of life. Argentines have identified themselves on several planes with this mythical hero, since Martín Fierro represents the drama of unsuccessful attempts at social integration throughout Argentina's history. The poem as quest for identity also bears a relationship with the social (the ownership of land)and the emergence of transnational violence.
Resumen: Texto completo del Martín Fierro de José Hernández (Ida y Vuelta), prólogo y epílogo de Mario Crocco (estudio general y estudio histórico), y dos glosarios (léxico de la obra y léxico criollo más general) se publican aquí con centenares de ilustraciones producidas durante más de un siglo. Considerada la más bella producción de laliteratura rioplatense, el poema épico fue escrito en el léxico hispano-criollo propio de los gauchos, aun parcialmente conservado en las pampas. Para fines del siglo XIX, la Argentina era uno de los países más ricos del mundo, igualando casi a Estados Unidos e incomparablemente más rica que España, la Madre Patria. Los criollos rioplatenses tenían legítimo motivo de orgullo, ya que su logropostcolonial fue uno de los mayores del mundo. Empero el poema retrata un mundo salvaje en que los verdaderos malvados son las fuerzas de modernización que destruyen su manera de vida. Los argentinos se han identificado sobre diversos planos con el mítico héroe, por cuanto Martín Fierro representa el drama de diversas tentativas fallidas de integración social en su historia.
