whale breeding occurs mostly in the winter to early spring while near the surface and in warm, tropical waters. The gestation period is about 11-12months . The newborn calf is about 14 feet long and weighs about 3 tons . Have offspring every two . Are considered adults at 4or 5 years.

whales live atthe surface of the ocean, both in the open ocean and shallow coastline waters. They migrate from warm tropical waters where they breed and calve to arctic waterswhere they eat.
There are 2 separate populations of whales, those living in the North Pacific Ocean, those in the North Atlantic Ocean.
caracteristics
These mammalsgrow to be about 52 feet or 16 meters , weighing 40 to 70 tons . The females are slightly larger than males. The heart of the average whale weighs about 430pounds about as much as three average adult human beings.
Parts of the whale
They measure from 5 to 25 meters long and unlike fish, whales have the tail arranged in ahorizontal plane.They have two spiracles, nostrils, located on top of the head, which expel water vapor often accompanied by mucus.
migration
baleen whales,migrate over very long distances each year. They travel, sometimes in groups (pods), from cold-water feeding grounds to warm-water breeding grounds.
Gray whales make thelongest seasonal migration of any of the whales. They travel about 12,500 miles each year.
WHALE SONGS
Complex whales songs can be heard for miles under thewater. The song can last for 30 minutes. the songs are thought to be used in attracting mates, to keep track of offspring, and for the toothed whales, to locate prey.
