Little Boy Crying by Mervin Morris

Activities

Stanza One.

1- What does the child want from his father?

The child wants from his father to confort him as he's keeping distance from his son for the missbehavied act he did which was the object of the slap's reason and for the sake of the kid to learn, to feel guilty because of the hit he gave his son which make him overburst intears-which might be considered overreacted- (which would make the father feel guilty also) and to appologize for what he had done (slap) which wouldn't be good towards the boy because what is said on Stanza 3 that he'd never learn his lesson because if he goes to appologize and confort him , it would probably be ruined and the slap would have been meaningless.

2- What might the words “contorting”and “angling” imply about the child's distress?

The words contorting and angling imply a change from happyness that the boy had before metamorphorsed into an angry and distressfull atittude. Contortning , which means changing violently and quickly into grimace (in this case) implies the child's attitude to change to a distresfull one with howls and his body tight (freezed) and the word Angling, means waiting which in this case , he waits for his dad to feel guilty for the slap and for him to appologize , that also implies the child being distressfull because of the distance the father is keeping and how the child's reaction of crying didn't change his father's mind about what he had just done.

3- Why are the child's eyes bright?

The child's eyes are bright mainly because of twodifferent reasons.
Firstly, because of the reflection of light of the tears in the kid's eyes. And second because of the eagernss the child has , since he's young, to grow up and move on to the future to get to know everyting that's waiting for him.

4- What words associated with water occur in the first stanza? Why?

The words associated with water which occur in the first stanza are, “Swimming” and“Splashing”, “your bright eyes swimming tears, splashing your bare feet”. This words are used to imply a connection between the cries of the kid, “swimming and splashing” referr to a big amount of water therefore standing a connection with the kid crying a lot.

5- What is the effect of the final three words, “Quick slap struck”?

The effect of the final three words “Quick slap struck” , which aremonosillabic words, are used to create an impact on the reader, in poetry the use of monosyllabic words accelerates the flow of the lines, therefore we can make a connection with the slap being so quick which caused pain and hurt to the kid concluding in the howls, his body changing to being tight and the cries.

Stanza two

1- List words or phrases that create the fairy-tale image.

Jack and thebeanstalk

Ogre
Grim Giant
Colossal cruel
Chopping clean the tree he's scrambling down.

2- What does this imply about the child's reaction to the events in stanza one?

The child's reaction to the events in stanza one makes the author use the fairy-tale to compare his attitude with the kid of the tale which are absoultely the same towards the giant (which would be his father). After hedevelops a state of anger and sadness towards his dad because of the slap he wants him dead , so the comparison between the kid of the tale wanting the ogre to die reflects the wish of the kid for his father to die as a victim of the “tale's” conclusion.
Both compare the same situation of the kid's wish.

3- What is the purpose of fairy stories in the education of children?

The purpose of fairystories in the education of children is that in poetry , allegory is used , which is to relate or referr to something well-known by society to make a comparison for example like in this case with the dad (ogre) and the boy (the kid). This stories are the ones little kids tend to read or are read by their parents while the vocabulary is easy for them so they find it easier to remember it, so...
