When the sun sets, the sky turns orange and the snow-capped peaks seem to burn like a splendid fire, emphasising the beauty of a handful of nearby towns. Night falls slowly in the Huaylas valley, in the department of Ancash, the twinkling stars send the lakes to sleep and wrap the narrow paths, the robust mountains and the restless flow of the river,in shadow.
The Huaylas valley, 400 kilometers north of Lima, is a genuine quirk of nature, with its impressive scenes of wild countryside, and its colorful valley formed from the Black and White mountain ranges, the Santa River flowing powerfully between the two, watering the fields of the picturesque chain of villages ranged along the length of its banks.
This area of high peaks is afavourite of mountain climbers from all around the world, as there are 35 peaks in the Valley over 6,000 meters high. Among them of course is Huascaran, with its 6,768 meters, the highest snow capped peak in Peru and the second highest in the Americas after Aconagua, in Chile. Another famous mountain of the Huaylas Valley, Alpamayo (6,210m) is known as the "most beautiful snow-capped mountain in theworld".
Huascarán and Alpamayo, are part of the highest tropical mountain range in the world, known as the White Mountain Range ("Cordillera Blanca"), not just due to its perpetual snow caps but also for the chemical constitution of its quartz and felspar rocks.
Adventures and challenges are to be had in this magical valley,where the chains of Black And White Mountains are formed and hiddentowns, such as Recuay, Carhuaz, Caraz and Yungay are to be found. Challenges and adventures in a place whose beauty is overwhelming and where the sky goes orange when the sun sets.
AREQUIPA - PERU

Founded on August 5, 1540, by Manuel Garci de Carbajal, the city's name comes from the Quechua phrase "Arequipa i" which means "Yes, stay". It's not justby chance however that its name has held true throughout time; in the city streets, in its 'sillar' walls and in the attitude of it's people you feel a peculiar energy, a strange impulse, inviting you to stay on in the city.
On the skirts of the western range of the Andes, at the foot of the Misti volcano, Arequipa (2,350 m.a.s.l.), is the capital of the department of the same name. It is abeautiful city of mansions, temples and convents built out of 'sillar' - a material of solidified volcanic rock -, and distinguished by a unique architectural style. Arequipa is surrounded by magical countryside giving it a refreshing, bucolic air.
In the Arequipa Historical Centreyou can admire a wholly 'arequipeño' architecturural style. Formed towards the end of the 17th century, it's a blendof Italian baroque, Spanish silver-plating and Andean creativity.
The ancestral mansions and the ancient churches and convents are built out of 'sillar', a pearl-white building material which, when the sun's light hits it, produces a glimmer, a magnificent glow, therefore causing people to affectionately call Arequipa "La Ciudad Blanca of Peru" ("The White City").
On the Arequipa outskirtsyou'll find fascinating villages with stepped terraces dating from pre-Inca times that are still used today by farmers from the districts of Chilina, Socabaya, Paucarpata, Characato and Sabandia.
Two of the world's deepest canyons are found in the department of Arequipa: Cotahuasi, in the province of La Union, and Colca, in the province of Cailloma. The spectacular Valley of the Volcanoes inAndagua, the beaches of Mollendo and Camana and Puerto Inca beach in Caraveli, are all fascinating places which must also be visited.
