SCALES
A few points to bear in mind when playing these scales: • Play in one breath. • Aim to make each note the same irrespective of register (this includes tone, production, articulation, end of the note,intonation.). • Practice at a speed where you can make each note sound distinct from the other notes around it. • Use a metronome and gradually build the speed up. • Aim for crotchet = 216. • Practice both tongued and legato. • Make up your own articulations (e.g. tongue two, slur two). • Listen • Try to practice these scales in the order they are here (i.e. C then F then Bb in a cycle of fifths).This will spread the workload on your lips and prevent tiredness. (Most people start at the bottom and work their way up, leaving all the high notes to the end). • There are only four chromatic scales to learn. After this the four beat groups all start on the same note. (i.e. F chromatic has the second four beat group starting on A. A chromatic begins with this four beat group!). • Equally thereare only two whole tone scales to learn. • If you think you’ve mastered the playing of scales – think again, were all those notes really perfect?
