Etymology
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of the tenth century is the oldest document in which the term appears Scotland , formed from the word Latin Scoti , of dubious origin, used as a reference to the inhabitants of Hibernia (now Ireland ). The word Scotia , published in the Vulgar Latin was used only to refer to the area of Scotland in spoken Gaelic , in addition, this term alternated with Albania, from the term Gaelic for Scotland, Alba In modern times the word Scot is applied to all inhabitants of Scotland, regardless of their ethnic origin as Scottish identity is primarily civic and not ethnic or linguistic. The term scot also used to refer to the Scots language , spoken in parts of the Lowlands and Scottish Lowlands

La Crónica anglosajona del siglo X es eldocumento más antiguo en el que aparece el término Scotland, formado a partir del término latino Scoti, de origen dudoso, empleado como una referencia a los habitantes de Hibernia (la actual Irlanda). La palabra Scotia, aparecida en el latín vulgar, se empleó sólo para referirse a la zona de Escocia en la que se hablaba gaélico; además, este término alternaba con Albania, procedente del término gaélicopara Escocia, Alba. En los tiempos modernos el término Scot se aplica a todos los habitantes de Escocia, independientemente de su origen étnico, ya que la identidad escocesa es primordialmente cívica y no étnica o lingüística. Education
The Scottish educationsystem has always been different from the rest of the United Kingdom , with a characteristic emphasis on general education. [61 ]Scotland was, after Sparta , first in designing a system of public education generally.
There are 14 universities in Scotland, some of which are among the oldest in the world. [67 ] [68 ]The country produces 1% of scientific publications in the world with only 0.1% ofthe population, and education institutions above are responsible for 9% of exports of services sector in Scotland. Law
Scottish law is based on Roman law , [24 ]combining elements ofboth civil law (which can be traced to the Corpus Iuris Civilis Latin), and the common law , originating in the Middle Ages .
Scottish law establishes three types of courts responsible for administering justice: courts civil , criminal and heraldic . The maximum field of civil justice is the Court of Session , although they made appeals to the Civil House of Lords in the United Kingdom . The HighCourt of Justiciary , for its part, is the highest criminal court. Both are located in the Parliament House , the former location of the Scottish Parliament . The main criminal and civil court however are the Sheriff Courts : There are 49 Sheriff Courts in Scotland assets. [30 ]The District Courts were created in 1975 for minor offenses. Finally, the Court of the Lord Lyon regulates the right ofarms.
