“I would like to learn English with one professor from my field because he knows exactly what I need to learn”… says Mario Luis Dueñas, astudent from Business Administration department at UMSA University.
That is just one commentary from many different students who have started learning English for specific purposes in their fields.So far, we have seen the importance of ESP in our Country. It helps us not only to get trained into our field, but also to develop the ability to communicate. Although some students consider that tolearn this language is an activity that needs to fulfill all their expectations with TEFL teachers, their Field teachers should do that work as well, so that they will be bringing them more benefitsbecause they know how it works. That is why one important question appears in this situation. Should we choose a specialist on the field to teach ESP or an EFL teacher?
First, The EFL teacher is trainedto be an ESP teacher. Without any doubts to become an ESP teacher is a step by step process. As Robinsons suggest in 1991 “A very important quality of the ESP teacher is flexibility, that is,changing from being an EFL teacher to being an ESP teacher.” That is why, an EFL teacher learns how to teach and which is the best way to improve the learning process. Besides, this teacher has approved therequirements of being an EFL teacher, by knowing how to design an EFL course, and later on become an ESP teacher, by designing another course in another field besides Linguistics based on the NeedsAnalysis.
“…we are required to design a course of English for students who need the language to read their specialist textbooks. How might we proceed? One way would be to get hold of the textbooksthey have to read and carry out a linguistic analysis to establish the defining characteristics of this particular register…” Widdowson (1983)
