A. What is the ATF and describe its mission.

The ATF is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The mission of the ATF is basically to protect communities from violent criminals or dangerous organizations. They are required to stop the illegal use of trafficking of firearms, illegal use and storage of explosives, the illegal use ofalcohol and tobacco products and terrorism.

The ATF works under the Department of Justice.

3. Write a 5-8 sentence paragraph summarizing the history of the ATF from1789-1998.

The ATF began in the year 1789 when the department of the Treasury needed a way to pay off a portion of the country’s debt from the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton suggested to put a tax on imported goods, but in the year 1791 the imports tax was not working when people started to ignore it. This caused the Whisker rebellion which occurred because of farmers not wanting to pay theirgrain taxes. In 1862, an Internal Revenue office was established and in 1863 tax collecting and law enforcement was put together when agents were sent to prevent tax evaders. The Whiskey ring was broken in 1875 by the agents that were sent. In 1877, the “Bureau of Internal Revenue” was used as the title and a Revenue laboratory was established in 1866 under the department of Agriculture. In 1919,the 18th amendment was ratified causing a Prohibition Unit to be formed the following year. This unit was elevated to Bureau Status in 1927 by the Treasury. There was a confusion made by congress which made the Bureau of Prohibition move to the department of Justice in 1930. Regarding the changes made, ATF is the name of the bureau.

A. The ATF offers analytical and advisory services on scientific matters. The laboratory services compromise with four organizational groups. There are 100 professionals who work in four labs in three cities. They have maintained their accreditation since 1984.

B. What is the mission of the ATF lab services?
The mission of these lab servicegroups is to provide accurate scientific information needed by the ATF to reduce violent crimes and to protect the public’s communities.

5. What role does the ATF play in Firearms enforcement?

The ATF plays an important role in Firearms because they focus on armed violent offenders and career criminals. They investigate and recommend prosecution of these offenders to reduce the level ofviolent crime. To enforce Firearms laws, the ATF issues firearms licenses and conducts firearms licensee qualification and compliance inspections. This includes identifying criminals who illegally purchase firearms

6. Name and describe the four main ATF career opportunities.

A. The four main career opportunities in the ATF are special agents, investigators, professional and technical,and an internship. A special agent investigates violations of federal law relating to firearms, explosives, arson, and alcohol and tobacco diversion. Sometimes they do surveillance, they interview suspects and witnesses, make arrests, obtain and execute search warrants, and search for physical evidence. Investigators on the other hand, are the ATF’s backbone. They investigate and interviewsuspects. The professional and technical careers focus in three main sections which are being an attorney, forensic professional and intelligence professional. Lastly, an internship career is basically to gain experience in the career you are headed towards. For and internship, any career path can be chosen; it doesn’t have to be in what you are majoring.
