Story of a Seductive Man
This novel makes us think about how life can be tough sometimes, and unfortunately, sometimes we wait until the last minute in this case death to realize how much we have done with our lives. After six month working as a clerk in Paris Georges Du Roy on of the main characters, after anencounter with his colleague he changes his career as a journalist. The protagonist is a interesting character who is characterized from the beginning as a liar, complex, and opportunistic. His only purpose is to get a high level status in life, and he really does not care about people, nor the cost he has to pay in order to get what he wants. He uses people as doors so he can move up and get his wishescome ture. Thanks to a close friend Du Roy gets a very good job; as a consecuence, he becomes very greedy; therefore poverty, adultery and jealously starts to appear in this story along with the plot.
In chapter one and two we can notice how the economy situation is affecting Du Roy by no having any money in his pockets; therefore, they are passing through a crisis. "When he reached thesidewalk, he paused to consider what route he should take. It was the twenty-eighth of June and he had only three francs in his pocket to last him the remainder of the month. That meant two dinners and no lunches, or two lunches and no dinners, according to choice" (chpt 1). Soldiers were living in poverty at that time. Georges Duruy uses his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics. But there are times when it is displayed unsteadiness and shyness, especially when he want to get a lady. All of this is what makes me think that he is not as silly as we believe at the very beginning in the story.
He is the protagonist of Bel Ami; hence, a very smart personage in certainly ways. Heappears before as a mediocre and slightly intelligent man; it does not have any scruple. But also it has another face, which shows to others, his good-looking and seductive personality. Also there are moments in which it proves to be insecure (confused, timid) and shy, especially when he wants to flirt with a lady. All this is what makes me think that it is not so dumb as we believe at first.
Inthis article the author Mary Evans describes, “Bel - Ami tells the story of a Sorgue, Georges Duroy, a soldier in the French army in Algeria who arrived in Paris without white and wanted to work the least. Bel - Ami (so will be dubbed by his successive mistresses) has not been grateful with the gift of intelligence nor culture, but it is attractive physically, so, naturally captivates theattention of all the women that he put forward. With these Wicker is not surprising that Bel - Ami decides, instigated by a former friend, being a journalist.” (Evans 616) unfortunately do not know writing, never work on anything, do anything useful or bother to cultivate his mind and his spirit for, someday make an interesting article. It may be surprising that Bel Ami is not trail from the beginning tothe civil service, but as we described his life in the novel it seems that with journalism you earned more and worked less. For this Bel Ami only have to behave like a real journalist: devote himself to find contacts that work for him, get arrange lunch and dinner conspiracy with important characters and allow you to lead a more unbridled pace of life that that his journalist status could makesuspicious. The novel is telling us about individuals who allow you to ascend socially which are not construction entrepreneurs eager; therefore, to cover some real estate problems, or political in desperate search of charisma. Women, simultaneous and successive mistresses and wives of Bel Ami, will be responsible for ensuring jealousy in his partner. The novel describes the rise of Bel Ami to...
