LIFE OF A SAMURAI
In the oldest days in Japan, the Samurais were the prominent class of warriors. They always remained loyal to their master and clan. They had a very particular type of life,living and dying for their job. During the Meiji restoration, Samurais were eliminated and obligated to find another job.
What most of the people know about the samurai is that they were living hardstrict life in the military and that they had always a high level in society, but in those times they had low class too, which made it necessary that they find jobs besides being a samurai. It could beeither fishing, farming lands, etc.
Something outstanding of this culture is that “a Samurai was not only a Samurai when he was at work, but was a Samurai 24 hours per day”. Samurais had an ethicstereotype, called Bushido. And we cannot leave behind the abilities of the Samurais with his sword, the most important weapon of the culture.
Like I said at the beginning Samurais were always ready tosacrifice their lives in battle if needed. If a Samurai failed his duty they performed something called seppuku: “a ritual suicide in order to save his honor”. The ones that betrayed the Samurais didnot receive this opportunity, and were mostly decapitated.
The life of a Samurai was far from exciting, was not appropriate for them to get drunk or appear with a woman in public, expect those whowere married. The rich Samurais were customers for Geishas.
The most popular Samurais in the history were Akamatsu Mitsusuke (1441) and Hattori Hanzo (1541-1596).
Skills of a Samurai: Besidesperfectly controlling the sword the Samurais knew how to move the Katana as good as his sword. They also knew their literature, fine art, and they had good social manners. If you compare a Samurai with aGeisha, they had a lot of things in common.
