The symbolic value of the forest in this story is related to the physical place of evil where Goodman Brown is facing his uncertainties and opposing desires between good and evil or mysterious things far from the religious culture and believes he knows. The forest later on comperes or relate the meeting with evil in hell like the description in a church to visit God and I quote ‘‘ ….the darkwall of forest, an altar like rock, blazing pines, the strange sinful hymn with all of this bathed in red light...’’. Deep in the forest is dangerous and hard to walk forward jet almost impossible to go back.
Another sign of evil are the character he finds in the forest turned bad in comparison to the appearance they had in Salem village, like for example the respectable, and honorable woman thatturns to be a witch; Brown’s wife Faith characterized in the village like innocent represented by a pink ribbon, also ends up in the forest, curious of finding out what is in the forest meeting; Brown is desperate for his wife: and I quote “Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One."
The descriptions of the forest are contrasted with those of Salem village in two examples; in the way theforest is described we can imagine the evil events to be found also Browns intention to know of them. We can find in the description of how Brown walks into the forest and I quote “He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind” you can imagine the way the streets in the villageopened up, where everybody can see each other and brightness is noticed; compared to “the narrow path” in the forest that is immediately enclosed by the dark trees. The other example is the emotion or feeling of fear and danger in contrast with the village of Salem which is safe place to be at.

“A rose for Emily” was a very intriguing thrill, and very William Faulkner like, kept me hooked until the end; which for me happened to be a surprise because although I expected him, Homer Barron, to...
