Monterrey Soccer Stadium

In recent months one of the most important issues here in Monterrey, besides the insecurity, is the stadium of the soccer team Monterrey. The stadium will be one of the best stadiums of soccer in Latin America and in a city like Monterrey, where the soccer is like a religion, the stadium is not just a project but a dream for many and many citizens of the city. All isright here but the problem is that the location of the stadium is La Pastora, the only forest in the city and serves like lung to it. The stadium occupies an important piece of the forest so ecological groups came out to defend the natural reserve. Is this fair? Why there and not in other place? The city will come out affected of this? How? Why?

o The Project

In 2008 was announced theproject of the stadium in Monterrey and after months of debate about where the stadium will be constructed finally a piece of the natural reserve “La Pastora” was choosed. After that announcement 3 years passed. Legal permissions between FEMSA( enterprise responsible for the project) and Semarnat to acquire the land had many obstacles. Among environmental impact issues, delimitation of land and evenerroneous delivery of planes were excuses for the delay. Finally, in the month of September the construction of the stadium was approved and in October the construction will start. In all this time, from the announcement to the approval different types of organizations came out to protest why the natural reserve was choosed and not another place. The condition of the forest during and after theconstruction was questioned as the future effects of the loose of an important green area. Ecologist and neighbors of the natural reserve have differences with the project but any one of these was heard. Now the stadium is a reality and it sees very difficult stop the project. Monterrey Soccer Stadium will impelled the development of Nuevo Leon and Monterrey metropolitan area in particular, with an investment that will generate economic activity, thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while respecting the natural environment and residential areas in the area. It will also strengthen the landscaping of the site with first-world project, modern andfriendly environment that will expand and improve the green areas, and protect natural resources. Additionally, construction of the stadium and additional sports facilities for community use, increase healthy living spaces and recreation for people, giving a higher visibility, and safety equipment to the area.

o Design

The stadium will occupy 5 acres. The dimensions will be the next ones:
-Large: 277 mts
- Height: 46 mts
- Circumference: 800 mts
- The stadium will have capacity for 50,000 persons

• Permeable Area

More than a third of the total land area will be green areas meeting with the regulations. These green areas will be used to filter rainwater, which will help to recharge aquifers.

• Parking Lot

Parking lots shall be adequately distributed aroundthe stadium, including wooded areas to achieve a future integration with the Ecological Park. These areas will be divided into zones or islands, which are integrated into the landscape and topography.

• Architecture

Monterrey Stadium will be a next-generation stage, planned in a responsible and integrated into its surroundings by its architectural design, an asymmetrical design inspired bythe surrounding mountains. The stadium will have areas of social interaction, creating a perfect atmosphere of privacy and security.
