Does the poet sees his “First Love” as a positive or a negative experience?

First love is a poem written by John Clare. I think that in this poem Clare was suffering from the consequences of a not corresponded love. The poem provides both energies, positive and negative feelings about love. Even though the negative points predominate throughout the poem in physical and emotional effects.

Inthe first stanza, in the first three verses he mentions the sweet feeling of love. He is stucked in the moment because his feelings about her are so big that he would like them to never go away. A love that is so sudden, it makes him feel nervous when he is nearby her. “Her face bloomed” to see a face bloom is something especial, it is not the kind of feeling when you see any other girl, it wouldjust happen with someone especial. Describing her face “like a sweet flower” gives us the image of a caring person. He associates her face a pleasant flavor, which is a positive thing about love.

However “And stole my heart away complete” is a connection between the opposite feelings, it can be interpreted by both sides. For someone to steal your heart, it means she is the one, the only onewho can take your mind out of anything just to have her, in mind. She can be the only one who can make you feel clumsy with, because she is the lucky one who won the victory of having your heart. On the other hand, for someone who stole his heart can be a wrong person. If someone steal it, it doesn’t mean you want her to have it, she could have had taken it away accidently. Or his heart could haveended in her hands but didn’t want it to, because is the wrong person to give it to. With his heart in her hands it is almost impossible to look for the correct person to give it to, leaving him with no options and not feeling good about it.

Continuously to the negative effects of love, in the poem comes a physical reaction. “My face turned pale, a deadly pale.” For him to turn pale is a sign ofnervousness and mostly a sick feeling. Feeling sick is disturbing, is not a way you want to be everyday; being down, depressed and without energy is definite negative points in emotions. His reaction to this love was blood draining down from his face. It was kind of like he died for a second, like his heart stopped beating from the shock of her beauty.

This day, that is being told that it wasthe day he saw a gorgeous woman who make him feel the emotion of love for the first time. In the poem he describes his actions as paralyzed, love leaved him unable to walk: “My legs refused to walk away”. He was in a state of shock, in his body there were sent messages about not leaving the place because he wants to be there but not completely.
When he says “My life and all seemed turned toclay” means his life was being molded by her. She was the one who gave him the mixture of emotions.

* His emotions blended with physical reactions, balancing between good and bad feelings. Sometimes he feels sick and bummed but when that tingly feeling in the stomach starts is like a never-ending experience. When blood rushes up to his face means he is blushed, so he is maybe he isembarrassed and nervous because of seeing her. I say this from the verse: “and then my blood rushed to my face”.

* As he sees her she becomes is the only thing he can focus on. He completely forgets about anything else, so she is his priority. He turns to be blinded by this insane love, which doubtfully will be corresponded. I think this is why he says “And took my eyesight quite away”, becausehe is saying she took it, not that he wanted to, she just did. As a result this point can be interpreted as negative because to be blind and disconnected from the world just because of a woman is not a good thing.
* Disorientation is also considered as bad, “Seemed midnight at noonday”. The drastic change between darkness and light tells us that she can turn his world around in just a...
