Agreeing and disagreeing Functions

There are different ways of reacting to other people's opinions, depending on how well you know the person and whether you agree or disagree.

Look at theseexpressions for agreeing and disagreeing with what someone has said.
If you want to agree with someone you can say:


That’s exactly what I think.
That’s just what I was thinking.That’s a good point
I agree entirely.


In my opinion, office workers are not paid well enough.


If you want to disagree with someone:


I can see whatyou mean, but…..
I don’t think so, because…..
I don’t think it’s a good idea….


Maybe, but don’t you think……?
That’s true, but on the other hand……….



▪Work in pairs. Look at these rather extreme opinions.
Smoking should be forbidden in offices.
All offices should have flowers in them.
All companies should offer their employeesfree lunches.
Overtime should be obligatory if the day's work is not done.

▪ Make up a conversation about each topic using the expressions above. For example.
“I think it wouldbe a good idea if all firms had facilities for looking after pre-school children.”
“I can see what you mean, but it would be a difficult thing to introduce.”
or “I agree entirely.”▪ Work in groups of three or four. Ask your partners what they think of the following opinions of the actions of management and bosses. Decide which of the opinions you can agree on:❖ people working in business should be told what to do and should do it without asking questions
❖ employees want to be recognized as people with their own (personal) needs
❖employees have to be forced to work: otherwise they are just lazy
❖ managers need to closely control what employees do
❖ nobody wants responsibility at work
