• IDEA/MISSION:

The Conference is aimed to help youth find ways to get involved positively and make a difference in their communities in whichthey live. It will engage and educate the Madison youth community in discussion about hip hop as a tool for expression and for learning. A Youth Conference will give college students a chance togive back and use the knowledge and skills that they have acquired to better this community directly.

MOTIVATION:

In our society, the portrayal of hip-hop is mainly portrayed in onelight, usually negative and does not fully encompass the entire hip-hop culture that many UW-Students embrace. The message popular culture portrays to today’s youth can be seen as materialistic andsexist among other things. Our aim is to provide a different view on hip-hop culture, one of a positive message. We want to give the youth of today more options and provide positive role models to lookup too. Today’s youth, especially underrepresented low-income youth, need to realize that college and a successful life is possible. We want to provide the skills for them to advance themselves intoleaders in the community and take responsibility for themselves and others. Knowledge is the key, and bringing the students to the students provides a sense of hope and community that is lacking inour society.

Last year’s theme for the Youth Conference was “Overcoming Injustice by Empowering Ourselves”

GOALS:
• Create a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and thelocal youth organizations in Madison.
