In life human beings are exposed to different kind of friendships and relationships. Some of
these friendships can be of different types depending on the meaning that every single individualassign
to them. Aristotle in his Nicomachean Ethics gives us a frame work discussing every type of
Interpersonal relationships. In this essay I will compare Aristotle’s definition with examples on myown
experience in and I will give my own definition of what I consider a good friendship.

For Aristotle there are three types of friendship. The first one is friendship based on utility. Heretwo individuals share some benefit from one another . I completely sympathize with Aristotle on this.
My experience in life show a lot of people who would fall on this category. Without trying oftake
advantage of people, it is the type of relationship that I consider more for necessity than anything else.
Two individuals satisfy whatever the other one is in need and vice versa. When Ijust arrive to this
country eight years ago I met a girl from Japan who was learning my native language. I needed to
improve my English language skills. We saw each other in the book store just forthat purpose. This
happened for three or four months until we never saw each other again. This is what I consider a
friendship based on utility. For me those four months were really importantgiving me more confidence
in my ability to communicate more clearly . I am pretty sure she shared the same value.

Another type of friendship according with Aristotle is friendship based on pleasurewhere
people are drawn to the other’s good looks or either physical or personal qualities. This category is kind
of tied to the first one in the sense that the individual is motivated by whathe needs to satisfy his

pleasure rather than anything that is consider as a true friend. My opinion on this kind of relationships
