In evolutionary biology, an evolutionary arms race is a struggle between competing sets of co-evolving genes that develop adaptations and counter-adaptationsagainst each other. It has been the process of organisms developing the greatest fitness in order to survive and passing those resistant genes to their offspring. The movie focused onseveral different places, times, and topics that help the viewer understand the course of this biological evolutionary arms race.
A place that the movie focuses at is Russia,home to the nuclear arms race, but it harbors one of the most deadly living viruses, tuberculosis. Specifically, the movie goes into Russian prisons where hundreds of inmates areinfected. Poor sanitation, confined spaces, poor nourishment, stress, consumption of alcohol and inhalation of cigarettes make the prisoners vulnerable to infectious diseases. Itonly takes a cough from an infected person and a breath of inhalation of a deceptive individual to infect. Many of these prisoners are treated in the prison but once they arereleased they stop taking the medication, the leaves an individual with the capacity to infect anyone around him/her. Also, interesting is that in some cases, the prisoners arereleased from jail still infected, and those strain of bacteria that were resistant to drug treatment begin to multiply and now you are left with bacteria that cannot be handled bymedicine.
I learned from this movie that this evolution arms race between humans and microbes is manmade. Almost half of the prescriptions in U.S are inappropriate or unnecessary.Too many antibotics lead to an excerlated evolutio process, and the outcome is drug resistance microbs to the point that the most dangerous bacteria will not be treatable.
