“OJ Simpson and Rodney King case Essays”
Three cases, three crazy rides. Trials made up of corruption, prejudice, and shocking truths. Two real cases and one from a book. Depicting how the US Justice System works and if the real justice prevails. If the juries minds were clouded or just simply prejudice? If the trials turned out to fair or unfair? If the police were the one who did wrong? To seeif the US Justice System evaluates these trials in all fairness and come up with the true and right verdict. The law: “Innocent until proven guilty”. If the Judges and juries hold this law to maximum respect. This is what was asked of these three cases, and these three cases are: The Rodney King beating, the Twelve Angry Men trial, and the O.J. Simpson case. How will the law judge these three? On the night of March 2, 1991 Rodney king went on a drunken ride to pick up some chicks with his friends. This night would end up as an embarrassment for the LAPD, an elite force of cops and a dreadful nightmare for the poor victim, Rodney King. On this night, Rodney received two shocks from stun guns, about 56 blows with metal batons, and some kicks to his body. All this was done by fourofficers known as: Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Sergeant Stacey Koon. These four officers were allegedly found guilty of using unreasonable force against an unarmed man. Soon after a video tape was released showing the violence which the officers had used, and the officers were in a world of trouble. This was all thanks to George Holliday, a man who awoke from his sleep due tothe sirens and lights. Almost immediately George starts recording the brutality that is unfolding on Glen 90 feet away. Soon all four officers were suspected and sent to court. Unbelievably, with all the evidence that the prosecutors had the jury ended up acquitting all four officers of their charges. Soon after the verdict was announce, all of California was on fire. After the people werepromised another trial, they did not stop. The result was about fifty-six people dead. Finally, Glen had his second chance and this time the system was not going to make another mistake. After quite a few days the verdict was finally reached. This time the jury was racially mixed and the judge was not bias. This series of corrections led to the conviction of Officer Powell and Sergeant Koon. They weresent to about thirty months in jail. In the end, Rodney got what he wanted, with a bonus of a couple of millions. I believe that Rodney did get what he was supposed to get in the first trial, but because of all the prejudice that came into the first jury there were fifty-six wrongful deaths.
Twelve Angry Men, a novel written by Reginald Rose, depicts how the US justice system could fail butin the end justice will always prevail. This book talks about the Justice System and how things could go the wrong way if the jury or lawyers make mistakes. In this case it would be how the Jury was prejudice and how eager they were to leave as soon as possible. These factors clouded the judgment of many of the jurors leading them to almost convict the kid of murder in less than a minute. Thenovel starts with the case and how only one juror dares to find reasonable doubt in the case. Little by Little other Jurors see that there is indeed quite a lot of reasonable doubt and that they must come up with the right verdict. I think that the author is trying to show/tell us in this novel that even if there are some problems with the US Justice System, Justice should always prevail. In the end,the jurors noticed how the lawyers did nothing and how the witnesses were probably lying. This led most jurors to change their verdict. Thanks to this one juror, the boy was able to get justice and freedom.
On 1995 an event occurred which shocked the American public. An American Football superstar and phenomenon had supposedly killed his ex-wife, Nicole Brown and her secret lover Ronald...
